Famously a founding member of The Avengers, Janet van Dyne first appeared as The Wasp all the way back in 1963. However, in current comics, Janet is usually referred to by her full name, and the title The Wasp is held by Nadia Pym, introduced in 2016. I highly recommend new readers check out the current series The Unstoppable Wasp, but those searching for a modern starting point featuring Janet van Dyne can check out Uncanny Avengers.
Unstoppable Wasp is by far my favorite new series of 2017, full of humor and heart. Nadia as a character somehow has this incredible authentic, infectious optimism that doesn't feel at all naive.
Both books of The Unstoppable Wasp (2017) are below:
The series was cancelled after book two, but in an almost completely unprecedented move, Marvel reversed their cancellation and the series by popular demand and The Unstoppable Wasp will return in October.
Janet, the original Wasp, has had a prominent, but not starring role in the Marvel universe the past few years. Since 2015 she has been part of the cast of Uncanny Avengers. This series features a lot of other characters new readers are likely interested in, like Deadpool, Cable, and Wanda the Scarlet Witch.
The official Uncanny Avengers books skip two issues which were collected in the Secret Empire tie-in book United We Stand. You can safely skip these and go right to book 5, but I've included them below for those interested:
